Glasgow specialist seafood product supplier enjoys export sales boost

A Glasgow company that manufactures a specialist product for the seafood industry has seen its exports significantly grow over the last year, establishing its presence for the first time in southern Europe, North America and Australia.

The product made by Xyrex Ltd is Prawnfresh, which is a liquid solution treatment used by seafood processors, farmers and fishermen on harvested prawns to prevent the onset of ‘blackspot’ or melanosis.

Blackspot is a natural and harmless condition, but because it causes unsightly discoloration of the shell, it can make the affected prawns difficult to sell.
Sulphite based treatments have been traditionally used in the past as a preventative treatment but Prawnfresh is more desirable to use and is more effective.

Building upon the success of Prawnfresh in the UK and Northern Europe, a sustained marketing campaign over the last year has resulted in a new sales surge, with seafood operators now using it in Spain, Italy, North and South America, as well as South Africa and the Asia Pacific region.

John Davis, managing director of Xyrex, says: “We have mounted a co-ordinated marketing campaign over the last year into key export markets and we are delighted that these efforts are beginning to bear fruit.

“There is huge growth potential for prawn farming, especially in the Far East, and we are looking to keep pace with the expansion of the sector.”
